New Student Orientation is designed to introduce you to University faculty and staff, students and resources.  It’s a fun-filled and informative time on campus, designed with you in mind!  Orientation will be all day Friday and Saturday, August 23 & 24.

Attending Orientation is a university requirement for all new students: first year, transfer and international students. New students will receive important materials (such as their student ID cards), and pertinent information that will be essential to a successful transition to Marymount (i.e., how to manage and operate Marymount academic systems).

All new students must register for Orientation after they have finalized their acceptance to Marymount and have paid their commitment deposit. RSVP by clicking here, and completing registration form. Once the form is submitted, you will see a confirmation page thanking you for registering.

What is the cost for Orientation?

The Orientation fee is $275, which will be added to the student's first semester’s bill. This fee includes the cost of all activities, all new student meals, up to 3 family members’ meals on Orientation Day 2, transportation to-and-from the residential sites to campus and all Orientation materials and supplies, as well as activities and programs during the first six weeks of the semester as students transition into college.

What is an Orientation session?

There are different Orientation sessions that students attend. On Orientation Day 1, students will have the opportunity to personalize their day by creating their own schedule and picking the sessions they would like to attend. On Orientation Day 2, students will gather in their assigned group (usually by major) to rotate through different sessions and activities. Examples of Orientation sessions include: Marymount Academics, Financial Literacy, Counseling Services, My.Marymount and IT and many more.

What else can I expect at Orientation?

New students will have the opportunity to “take care of business” and handle any holds on their student accounts. They can take their student ID pictures, join their SOSers for a “resource walk,” and jump on a Marymount shuttle to tour our different campus and residential sites. Students will have the opportunity to meet staff and faculty to ask questions about their majors, the resources available on campus or how to get involved. Of course it wouldn’t be Orientation if there weren’t fun-filled social events to help students meet other new students and create their first college memories.

May families attend?

We encourage families to attend Orientation. Family Orientation sessions are designed to answer family questions and concerns. The majority of the family sessions will run concurrently with student orientation sessions. We ask families to attend their specific sessions while their student attends the student specific sessions. This is intentional so students may begin their transition to life as a college student. There will also be a special Mariner Family Social event where families can meet and mingle with other new Mariner families as well as Marymount faculty and staff.

What do I need to bring to Orientation?

An open mind and a great attitude! We will supply students with everything else they may need – meals, materials, and lots of new information!

Please note: if this year is anything like previous years during Orientation expect HOT days! It will be important for you to dress appropriately for the heat. We have the power to provide you with water and limited air conditioning and shade, but unfortunately we cannot control the outside temperature during Orientation. Believe us, if we could we would!

What is a SOSer?

Student Orientation Staff (also known as SOS or SOSers) are Orientation leaders that assist new students (first years, transfers and international students) with their transition to Marymount California University (MCU). SOSers are selected through an application and interview process, and participate in a one-week training prior to working with new students.

How many freshmen enroll each year? What is the total student enrollment?

About 450 new students enroll each fall and about 75 new students in the spring. MCU has a total enrollment of about 1,000 students.

When can I move into my residence hall?

All residential students will move in on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Students with last names A-M will move in between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Students with last names N-Z will move in between 12:00 pm and 5:00pm. Student Orientation Staff will be there to welcome and help students move in.

If I am a commuter and not living in Marymount residences, when do I arrive for Orientation?

Commuters are invited to join us for our Mariner Madness event on Thursday, August 22 from 6:00-9:00pm at the San Pedro Residential Campus. Make sure to bring a picture ID to enter the event. Addionally, commuters are invited to join their SOS staff for breakfast and/or a hike in the morning on Friday, August 23. If you decide to not attend any of these events, then you are required to start Orientation on Friday, August 23 at 1:00pm at the Oceanview campus.

We highly encourage commuter students to get involved as much as possible during Orientation.

Where do I park/driving directions?

Parking is available anywhere on the Oceanview campus except the Upper Cecelia Quad parking lot (it will be roped off for a student event).  We are located at 30800 Palos Verdes Dr E, Rancho Palos Verdes CA 90275.  See map above for directions!

Please note: DO NOT park on San Ramon Road. Marymount employees and students are not allowed to park on this road, and will receive parking citations from the city for violation.

When do classes begin?

Classes begin Monday, August 26, 2013.

What happens in the first year course, ID 117: The Art of Being Human?

All first year students are required to take ID 117. This course is intended to further educate new students about the resources available on campus. It also helps new students learn more about themselves, identify their skills and passions, and meet similar minded students.

What are Mariner Madness Days?

Mariner Days are fun-filled weeks of activities designed to help students become more integrated into university life. It begins during Orientation and continues on every Friday through the next several weeks. Some events you can expect include a pool party, festivals, a dance, and more! All events will take place on the Oceanview campus.
